3d printed guitar

When the COVID-19 lockdowns hit, I found myself working from home.  Since I was stuck at home, I decided that I needed a project to work on.  Like many people, I found myself working from home.  Working from home allowed me to run big, long running print jobs on my 3d printer without having to leave it unattended.  I had recently gotten interested in learning to play the guitar, so what better way to learn than to make my own 3d printed guitar.

Apartment Tool Kit: Tools renters should own

Tool Box

As a renter most of the ‘home maintenance’ tasks around your apartment will be taken care of by property maintenance or your land lord. But that does not mean that you do not need your own basic set of tools. It is good to have a basic tool kit, that way you can do things like assemble your new flat-pack bookshelf from Ikea, or take care of small issues that are not worth calling property management. With those kinds of tasks in mind, here are my top tools that every renter should have in their apartment tool kit.

3d printed rocket

There are many different kinds of plastic that can be used in an FDM (fused filament fabrication) style 3d printer.  PLA, PETG and TPE are three of the most widely used filament types. Which filament type is best for you to use for your project?  Well, the answer is often ‘it depends’. As frustrating as that non-answer is, here are some key differences that may help you choose the right filament for your application.

How to change your own oil: A step by step guide

car in a garage

Auto maintenance can seem scary to someone who has never opened the hood of their car. A simple oil change is a good introduction to working on vehicles and a good way to build up your mechanical skills.

Additionally, changing your own oil is a good way to save money.  Paying a dealership to change the oil in your car can cost upwards of $100, whereas changing your own oil can be done for as little as $30! Manufacturers recommend changing your oil every 3-5000 miles.  If you keep  your car for 10 years, that works out to 27 oil changes.  At $100 each change that is quite a savings.

Green Onions

When you buy green onions from the grocery store, you cut off the white part at the bottom, and then use the upper portion of the plant in your dish.  But did you know you can use the white part to regrow your green onions for years to come?

Car Maintenance

Cars are complex machines that need regular maintenance in order to keep them running.  Mechanics devote their careers to keeping them on the road.  However, not all maintenance is complex and requires specialized tools and training.  There is a lot of maintenance / repairs that the average car owner can perform themselves with a basic tool set.

Bottles of homemade mead

Mead is one of the oldest known types of alcohol, dating back to ancient civilizations across the globe.

In its simplest form, mead is the combination of honey, yeast and water.  If you combine those three things and wait for a few months you will have a delicious sweet honey wine.

Tinkerer

I'm Jim. I've always liked tinkering and building things. As a kid I always took broken things apart to harvest any screws or parts I could find before letting my parents throw anything away. Now I want to share some of the things I've learned over the years.
